Kumasi, April 10, GNA – An Optometrist has advised Ghanaians to go for regular eye check-ups to help improve their vision in the wake of eye-related diseases.
Dr Mahazu Zakaria of the Visionplus Eye Care Centre observed that most eye-related diseases such as cataract and glaucoma could be prevented by seeking early medical attention, stressing that glaucoma for instance was difficult to treat when it reached an advanced stage. He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency after he led some medical personnel to undertake an eye screening exercise for residents of Aboabo Number Two in Kumasi.
The African Neighbours Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), sponsored the exercise which targeted about 1,500 people mostly the aged, women and children.
Dr Zakaria said the eye was an important organ of the human body which demanded great care, adding that it was therefore incumbent on the citizenry to avoid all forms of practices such as smoking, self-medication and exposing the eye to the direct sun rays which could be detrimental to their vision.
Madam Mamata Sheriff, Chief Executive Officer announced that her outfit had donated dustbins to some selected basic schools at Aboabo Number Two as part of efforts to promote good hygienic conditions.
Since last year the NGO had also sponsored five under privileged single parents to acquire employable skills to enhance their livelihoods.
