Winneba, Aug. 20, GNA – The Executive Director of Rescue Foundation Ghana, a child advocacy non-governmental organisation, (NGO) Mrs Sylvia Hinson Ekong, has appealed to religious leaders to help stop child trafficking in their localities.
She said as people who dealt with most of the people in their communities they should be able to change the attitude of the community members against child trafficking.
Mrs Ekong said this at a day’s capacity building workshop the Foundation organised for 50 religious leaders in the Effutu Municipality at Winneba.
The programme, sponsored by Geneva Global International, was attended by Christians, Muslims and fetish priests.
It was aimed at providing the participants with knowledge in child trafficking, mechanism, effect, impact and laws that prohibit human trafficking.
It was also to enable them mainstream these issues of child trafficking and worst forms of child labour into their daily interactions with their congregation/worshipers.
Mrs Emelia Oguaah, a retired social worker, said engaging children in labour to generate income for the family was an offence and offenders could be mmprisoned not less than five years.
