Ejisu (Ash), Aug 18, GNA – The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of AIESEC has called for the stepping up of sex education to help stop the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Miss Yazhi Liang, the Programme Director of the international students’ organization, said more needed to be done by teachers, particularly, in basic and secondary schools, to assist students to have better understanding of their sexuality.
She was opening a two-week peer educators training workshop on HIV/AIDS for over 250 students at the Spiritan University College at Ejisu.
It is designed to equip them with the relevant information about the deadly disease to enable them with their peers make wise choices regarding their sexual lives.
The programme is part of an effort to help bring down the incidence of early sex among the youth and reduce the risk of contracting STDs. It is being organized by AIESEC.
Already, the organization has formed more than 40 anti-HIV-AIDS Clubs in Junior and Senior High Schools in the Ashanti region.
Miss Yazhi said sex education could serve as a powerful tool for healthy life and personal development.
Mr Bill Graham Osei Akomea, former Ghana National President of AIESEC, appealed to parents to spend quality time with their children to protect them from peer influence.
He blamed the growing indiscipline of the youth on irresponsible parenting.
