Agona Kwanyaku (C/R), Aug 12, GNA – The World Vision Ghana, an international non-governmental organisation (NGO), has donated relief items worth about GH¢1,200 to flood victims at Agona Kwanyaku in the Central Region.
Thirty families who were worse affected benefited from the items which included mattresses, blankets, mats and insecticide treated nets.
Presenting the items to the beneficiaries on behalf of the NGO Mr Johm Oremus Arko, District Chief Executive for Agona East, said 1,054 people in the district were affected by the flood out of which 420 came from Agona Kwanyaku whilst the others were from Brahabekume, Ofoase and Domoki.
He said Domoki village, which was sited at the confluence of rivers Ayensu and Akora, was completely washed away and the people settled at a camp at John Ekoraa.
Mr Arko expressed gratitude to World Vision Ghana, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and World Food Programme for their support for the victims.
He said four camps had been set up in the three worse affected districts, namely Agona West Municipality, Agona East and Agona and Gomoa East, to settle the victims.
He said negotiations were on-going with Habitat International, NGO, for it to help to relocate the Domoki village, and appealed to other organisations and donor agencies to assist the victims.
Mr Arko expressed concern that the flooding was the result of human activities and appealed to the people to use June 20, 2010 event as an eye opener to learn how to manage the environment especially to desist from putting up structures on water ways.
He was grateful to the citizens of Agona who put their lives at risk to rescue distressed people from getting drowned.
Mr Emmanuel Amarteifio, District National Disaster Management Organization Coordinator on behalf of the recipients expressed gratitude to the donors.
