Accra, July 31, GNA – The Mensah Sarbah Hall Alumni Association (MSHAA) of the University of Ghana, has begun constructing a 2000-capacity hostel complex to help reduce the acute accommodation problem facing students of the hall.
The construction of the six-floored storey building, which is located on the Campus of the University, will be executed in phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion by December this year.
Mr Kweku Kyei, outgone President of the MSHAA, who conducted newsmen round the facility ahead of the Association’s national congress to elect new executives on Saturday, said the first phase was estimated to cost GHc600,000.
Mr Kyei, who is a former Inspector General of Police, said MSHAA under a partnership; Vikings Project Limited, had teamed up with some financial institutions to undertake the project adding, the proceeds would be used to defray the expenses.
He said it would be rented out to the students at affordable cost.
He said when completed, it would boast of modern facilities such as laundry, internet, recreational centres, banks amongst other facilities, to enhance academic exercise of students.
Mr Kyei said MSHAA had planned to replicate similar project on campuses of other public universities to help minimize the acute accommodation problem facing in universities.
He called on other alumni associations to emulate the example of MSHAA.
Dr James Adomako, Hall Master lauded the project saying it would reduce pressure on the existing facilities.
Dr Adomako said the Hall currently had a student population of about 5900 but could provide accommodation for about 1900.
Meanwhile, the MSHAA has elected new executives to run its affairs for the next two years.
The six-member executives have Mrs Difie Agyarko-Kusi as its President.
Mrs Agyarko-Kusi pledged to lead MSHAA to continue the projects embarked upon by her predecessors.
The election was conducted by Ms Gloria Akuffo, a former Minister of State.
