Drivers urged to respect road safety regulations

Koforidua, Feb 19, GNA- Superintendent of Police James Sarfo Peprah, the Eastern Regional Commander of the MTTU, on Friday appealed to drivers to observe the road traffic regulations particularly, the permitted speed limits when approaching towns and villages.

Strict adherence to the driving regulations, he said, would forestall many of the road accidents and knockdowns of innocent pedestrians. Mr Peprah, who spoke to the GNA in an interview, said in January 21 persons lost their lives and 174 seriously injured in motor accidents. Twenty-two pedestrians including children less than eight years who were crossing roads were also knocked down and killed by vehicles. He said the death toll from knockdowns was very worrying especially when all happened in towns and villages where careful driving and strict observation of the 30 km per hour speed limit would have saved the lives of the pedestrians.

Mr Peprah said the police could not be everywhere directing vehicles, hence the location of visible road signs.

He said the rampant erection of illegal road blocks on highways which he described as dangerous to the road users especially pedestrians because they had no signs to warn drivers. He said road safety was a shared responsibility and the police, drivers, passengers and pedestrian should always ensure that the right thing is done for the safety of life and property.
