Telecom Experts Meet

A meeting of the Africa Network Operators Group (AfNOG) and the Africa Internet Registry, Africa Network Information Center (afriNIC) was held at the weekend in Accra following its inauguration in May last year in Cape Town, South Africa.

The conference under the theme, “A strike against Techno- Colonialism” provided the opportunity to re-emphasise the conviction that Africa will not be ready for the new global economy unless it develops its own human resources. It also served as a forum for the exchange of technical information and cooperation among network service providers to ensure the stability of service to end-users.

Among dignitaries who attended the conference were Mr. Andrew Mclaughlin, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General on Information Technology and Dr. Nii Narku Quaynor, Chief Executive Officer of Network Computer Systems NCS.

Speaking to The Accra Mail, Dr. Quaynor explained that AfNOG was designed to bring together global experts with the latest technological know-how and resources to carve a legal framework for the fast growing Information Technology industry.

He said NCS as a co-sponsor, sees this as a platform to share the experiences of sister countries with the people of Ghana.

Participants were from Mauritius, Guinea, Nigeria, Gambia, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, Tunisia, Congo, Ethiopia, Togo, Niger, Sudan, Eritrea, South Africa and America.
