US NGO helps to control spread of buruli ulcer

Busunya, Nov. 17, GNA – Mr. Peter Paul Anekor, Nkoranza North District Disease Control Officer, has commended the Medical Assistance Programme (MAP) International, a US non-governmental organization, for helping to control the spread of buruli ulcer in the district.

Addressing more than 30 health workers in the district at a one day workshop at Busunya on the buruli ulcer situation in the area, Mr. Anekor said the NGO’s intervention had curtailed the spread of the disease in the district.

The MAP has provided a motorbike to the District Health Directorate to carry out surveillance in the communities as well as a skin grafter machine to the surgical department of Saint Theresa’s Hospital in Nkoranza to treat disease and other severe burns, he said.

Mr. Anekor said nine cases of buruli ulcer were recorded between January and September in the district and mentioned Pienyina, Junction-Mangoase and Yefri as the endemic areas.

Mr. Anekor commended MAP for sponsoring the training workshop for 100 teachers in the district on the early detection and reporting of cases of the disease and urged assembly members and traditional authorities to encourage people to seek early medical treatment of the disease.

Miss Vivian Dapaah, Nkoranza North District Assistant Disease Control Officer, said health officials were carrying out surveillance at Dromankese and Senya where the people had reported suspected guinea worm cases. She appealed to teachers to conduct regular hygienic inspection on their students and to report unfamiliar skin diseases to the medical authorities.
