Legon Nungua Farm lands are not for sale- Vice Chancellor

Accra, Sept 6, GNA, Prof. Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe, Vice Chancellor, University of Ghana (UG), on Sunday said the UG farm land was part of the parcels of stool land that government recently handed over to the Nugua Traditional Authority.

“I will like to plead with prospective land buyers not to be lured into purchasing parcels of land on the university’s Agricultural Research Centre allotment at Katamanso because it is the property of UG. Any person who goes to buy land at that site does so at his or her on risk,” he said.

Prof. Tagoe said this when a joint military and police supervised the demolishing of unauthorized structures at the site near Ashaley Botwe, a suburb of Accra on Sunday.

He said the University has all the legal and appropriate documents covering that parcel of land and warned developers not to trespass since those doing so would have their structures demolished.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Ms. Stella Amoa, Acting Director of Public Affairs, University of Ghana, said about 2,570 acres of land was initially acquired by the then Governor General in 1953 for a 200 year leasehold from the Nungua Traditional Authority. She said it was shared between the UG and the Ministry of Agriculture of which about 954 acres was allocated to UG to be used for Crops and Animal Research.

Madam Amoa said the University authorities found out about the activities of encroaches and warned them to desist from such practice but to no avail.

Mr Emmanuel K. A Ghanasah, Acting Deputy Director, Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate, UG, said plans were ahead to relocate a section of the Crops and Animal department to the site.

Present at the site were Prof. Kwesi Yankah, Pro-Vice Chancellor of UG, Dr. Augustine Naazie, Head of Agriculture Research Centre, UG and other officials.
