Tema, July 24, GNA – The police commander has called on the police service to adopt modern procedures for identifying suspected criminals by victims. Superintendent Gabriel Amankwah Dokyi, Tema Community “2” District Police Commander, who made the call, said the current method of identification parade in the country was not yielding the expected results. Supt. Dokyi explained that the process of lining up the criminals in the open and covering the victims’ faces with clothes with perforated holes in them to point a criminal out was outmoded. He made the call on Wednesday after 10 suspected criminals were paraded at the Tema Community “2” Police Station for identification by the public. The district commander noted that robbery victims most often boycotted such parades due to the fear of being identified and attacked by other members of the robbery syndicates. Supt Dokyi said it was about time that facilities such as screens were used for the identification to ensure the maximum safety of witnesses. Meanwhile none of the 10 suspected criminals paraded were identified by the two victims, who participated in the exercise, despite the large number of people that thronged the premises. Four of the suspected criminals were arrested for attempting to snatch a KIA taxi car from a driver while the rest are being held for other criminal offences. 24 July 09
