I sell cannabis to make a living- Convict tells court

Accra, Nov. 7, GNA- An Accra Circuit Court on Friday sentenced a 26-year- old unemployed Salami Dodzi to 10 years imprisonment after he had told the court that he sells cannabis to make a living. Dodzi pleaded guilty to possessing narcotic drugs without authority and the court presided over by Mr Mahamadu Iddrisu convicted him accordingly.

“Because you did not waste the court’s time by going into full trial I would give you the minimum sentence,” the judge declared. The court further ordered the destruction of the 972.5 grammes of certified cannabis in the presence of the court registrar, court officials and the press. Police Chief Inspector R.K Dzogbeti, prosecuting told the court that the complainant was Mr Peter Nanfuri, Former Inspector General of Police (IGP).

He said on August 5, last year, the former IGP reported to the police at Kwabenya that some squatters in his uncompleted story building at Musoku, near New Kwabenya were dealing in narcotics. The prosecution said at about 1300 the same day, the police proceeded to the place and met Dodzi in one of the room’s upstairs preparing banku and during

a search in his room found two parcels of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis in a polythene bag known as “Ghana must go.” He said when the police quizzed him about the dried leaves found in his room, he claimed ownership saying he bought them at Nima but failed to lead the police to the said spot and after investigations charged with the offence.
