Korle Bu to begin kidney transplant services

Accra, Aug 6, GNA – Kidney transplant services would begin next year at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Discussions are also underway to establish a National Kidney Centre at the hospital next year to cater for the increasing number of kidney patients in the country.

Dr. Charlotte Osafo, Head of Kidney Foundation at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, made the disclosure at a ceremony on Wednesday in Accra when Barclays Bank presented four cheques for GH¢ 32,000 to four centres, College of Health Sciences, Ghana Heart Foundation, Kidney Foundation and the Cardiothoracic Centre of the Hospital.

Dr. Osafo said the four kidney centres that the country currently had were inadequate to cater for the increasing number of people suffering from kidney related problems.

She therefore appealed to other corporate organizations to emulate the gesture of Barclays Bank to support the Foundation in its efforts to establish the centre.

Mrs Shola Safo Duodu, Head of Corporate Affairs, Barclays Bank, who presented the cheque, said the bank believed in investing in the communities of its operation.

She said the presentation was in appreciation of the provision of essential services by the centres in saving lives.

Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, Professor Andrew Anthony Adjei and Dr Charlotte Osafo, Heads of the Ghana Heart Foundation, College of Health Sciences and the Kidney Foundation respectively received a cheque for GH¢10,000 each on behalf of their institutions, while Professor Frimpong-Boateng, received a cheque for GH¢2,000 for the Cardiothoracic Centre.
