Despite the general commendation of the media by the opposition parties in this year’s electioneering campaign, a few of them have complained of discrimination in the coverage of their activities.
At a recent media and political parties’ forum in Accra, a representative of the Great Consolidated Peoples Party accused the media of favouritism in their reports.
As the election day approaches even in the midst of the uncertainties, media analysts have been assessing the role of the media in the political campaigning. Studies conducted show that the state media which has often been criticised for unfair coverage of political party activities, has made some progress.
In an interview with JOY FM, the GJA president, Mrs Gifty Affenyi-Dadzie, observed that some opposition parties have a wrong notion of the term, equal coverage. While, she believes that the state media has done well, she admits that there is still room for improvement.
Currently, many opposition parties agree that coverage of their activities by the state media has greatly improved compared to previous election years. The UGM’s presidential candidate, Dr. Charles Wereko Brobbey recently commended the state media for their coverage of opposition parties.
