An 87-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison with hard labour after being convicted of defiling a nine-year-old girl at Ofankor, a suburb of Accra.
Yaw Gahornu was prosecuted by the Tesano Divisional Police Command and sentenced by the Gender-Based Violence Court at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) Headquarters.

The child told her mother that Gahornu had allegedly abused her repeatedly between July and August 2026. The alleged offences involved both vaginal and anal penetration.
Further police investigations found that the accused had allegedly lured the girl to his sleeping quarters and threatened to kill her if she told her mother about the abuse.
The alleged assault was reportedly witnessed on 31st August 2026 by the accused’s granddaughter. She informed members of the family, including the girl’s mother, after which the matter was reported to the Police.
Gahornu was subsequently charged and brought before the Gender-Based Violence Court, where he was found guilty of defilement and handed the 20-year prison sentence with hard labour.
The Accra Regional Police Command said it welcomed the outcome of the case and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable people.
It also urged members of the public to report suspected child abuse to the Police promptly so that the allegations can be investigated and appropriate action taken.
