8-year-old pupil falls to his death in school’s pit latrine

An eight-year-old-boy met his untimely death when he fell into his school’s pit latrine in Nima, here in Accra, Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses say eight-year old Kamel Bashiru, a class three pupil of the Greater Care International School fell into the pit latrine at about 12pm yesterday.

His body was, however, retrieved three hours later.

Joy News’ Manasseh Awuni Azure who visited the deceased residence at Nima reports that the boy’s grandfather Abubakari Musah said Kamel was in good health when he left for school yesterday.

The lifeless body of the young boy lies on a bed in the room filled with the smell of burning incense, Manasseh said, and observed that already the body was beginning to decompose, especially around his nose.

Bashiru’s grandmother Zulei Ibrahim told Joy News she was at home yesterday when she received a distress call to go to her grandson’s school. Only for her to go and find gloomy crowd gathered around the boy’s lifeless body.

When Joy News proceeded to the Greater Care International School, where the boy died, the authorities would not allow anyone in but some angry residents of the area who have besieged the school, blamed authorities of negligence.

Manasseh gathered that the school had not reported the death of the boy to the police.

However, school authorities and the family members of the boy were locked up in a meeting to discuss the repercussions of burying the boy without informing the police.

Meanwhile, officials of the school have declined comment on the matter for now.
