44 drivers fined GHC6,060 in Sunyani

Forty-four drivers in the Sunyani Municipality have been fined a total of GH¢6,060 for various traffic offences.

Some of the offences were driving without licences, riding without helmet, speeding, drunk driving and driving with worn out tyres.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Teddy Damptey Brown, Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of Ghana Police Service, told Ghana News Agency in Sunyani that the drivers were arrested in a special exercise.

He said the exercise was to minimise road crashes.

ASP Brown observed that in spite of a number of road safety educational programmes organised for drivers, there is an upsurge of road crashes in the Municipality.

He said 51 people died, 256 received injuries with 45 of them in critical condition from 180 road crashes recorded during the second quarter of 2013.

ASP Brown advised drivers to obey road traffic regulations and respect the rights of pedestrians.
