34 Mahama ‘killers’ discharged, rearrested

An Accra District Court on Wednesday 21 Jun, discharged 34 suspects standing trial in connection with the murder of Major Maxwell Mahama at Denkyira Obuasi.

The 34 were discharged and rearrested to allow the police join them to a similar case in which 24 others have been charged following the murder.

The prosecutors, led by DSP George Amegah, prayed the court to discharge the 34 suspects to enable them have one charge sheet for all the suspects since there are currently three charge sheets.

The court granted the request and the 34 were discharged only to be rearrested to help the police prepare one charge sheet for all the suspects.

Major Mahama was lynched by irate youth of Denkyira Obuasi on suspicion that he was an armed robber, after a snail seller informed the assemblyman of the area that the soldier was an armed robber, having seen the sidearm of the now deceased officer as he took money from his pocket to pay for snails he had bought from her.

He was buried on Friday, June 9.
