2016 polls: New EC boss will declare me winner – Akufo-Addo

The three-time flagbearer of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed confidence that he will be declared winner of the 2016 presidential elections by whoever takes over from Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan as Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC).

“We will not waste the opportunity presented by 2016,” he told a crowd of women supporters from the Subin constituency when they visited his Nima residence in Accra Wednesday.

“We will ensure that at the end of the vote-counting, only one result will be announced by the new Chairman of the Electoral Commission: that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the victor,” he told the cheering crowd.

The former Attorney General is having a third shot at the presidency in 2016 after two failed attempts in 2008 and 2012 in which he lost to John Mills (late) and President John Mahama, respectively.

Mr Akufo-Addo’s third try at the presidency will be under the chairmanship of a new EC Boss as Dr Afari-Gyan is due for retirement in June this year, as he clocks 70 years – the compulsory age of retirement stipulated by the Constitution for the EC Boss, Chief Justice, Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), among others.

Akufo-Addo is confident 2016 will be his year of victory under the new Chair of the Electoral Commission.
