150 people to benefit from surgery outreach programme

Jasikan, June 29, GNA- More than 150 members of the Jasikan District Mutual Health Insurance Scheme are to benefit from weeklong surgery outreach programme.

The exercise would cost the Scheme GH¢60,000, Dr Samuel Abudey, Jasikan District Director of the Ghana Health Service said this at the start of the programme.

It is being carried out by a seven-member team of specialist doctors of the Christ-leads Medical Services, grouping 30 Medical Doctors from across the country.

Cases to be treated include, fibroid, goitre, swellings, urine retention, eye problems and hernia. Dr Abudey, who is also the Medical Superintendent of the Jasikan District Hospital, appealed to government to either build a modern district hospital in Jasikan or upgrade the existing 48-bed hospital to facilitate quality health delivery.

He said the hospital lacks staff, sanitation facilities for patients and an ambulance.

Mr Douglas Sogblame, Jasikan District Mutual Health Scheme Manager said over 200 members of the Scheme benefited from the outreach programme last year at a cost of GH¢42,000. Dr Christian Kofi Amenuveve, Founder and Mission Leader of Christ-leads Medical Services said the programme was in fulfillment of members’ social responsibility to society, for making them what they are today.

He said the programme, which started in 2002 with few doctors, continued to attract many more from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Tema General hospital, the Trust hospital, Cocoa Clinic and some doctors from Volta, Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, Upper East and West. Dr Amenuveve, a consultant surgeon said the NHIS has made it possible for many more people to benefit from the programme from less than 30 patients prior to the introduction of the Scheme.
