Aboadze (W/R) Jan. 28, GNA- Fifteen students including three girls, pursuing courses in Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) and tertiary institutions in the country were on Wednesday awarded scholarships totalling 40 million cedis towards their education.
Mr and Mrs Larry Kramer, first general manager of Takoradi International Company (TICO) a subsidiary of the Takoradi Thermal Plant and his wife instituted the scholarship three years ago, for brilliant students in the Aboadze and Abuesi communities.
Mr. Marshall Pendergrass, general manager of TICO said already, 50 students have benefited from the scheme since its establishment, adding that, “The scheme is aimed at building upon the educational infrastructure of the community and to ensure the nurturing of highly skilled workforce for the country”.
He said the Company would soon receive a container of books and other educational materials for distribution to schools within its catchments area.
Mr. Pendergrass said a medical facility built by the Volta River Authority (VRA) to provide the basic health needs of the people would soon become operational.
Madam Sophia Horner-Sam, Deputy Western Regional Minister said without the appropriate human resources, money and material resources cannot complement the development efforts of any country.
She said the construction of 44 six-classroom blocks for primary schools in the region, indicates government’s determination to improve the educational level of the citizenry.
Madam Horner-Sam appealed to parents and guardians to give their children spiritual and moral upbringing, in addition to their educational needs.
“The focus on the girl-child, should be paramount to all parents and thereby improve their chances of assuming leadership roles in the society and the nation as a whole,” she added.
Mrs Angelina Baiden-Amissah, Member of Parliament for Shama, expressed her appreciation to the management of TICO for its continuous support for the communities in its operational areas.
She urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and serve as role models for other children within their schools and communities.
