14-year-old school boy to go through heart surgery

Accra, Nov. 10, GNA – Ms Francisca Darko, Deputy Director of Nursing Services at the National Cardio Thoracic Centre, on Wednesday gave the assurance that Master Andrew Duvor, a 14 year-old pupil of Kotobabi 7 Junior Secondary school, would soon undergo surgery.

She said this when Mr A.B. Amoatey, Director of Accra Metropolitan Education Unit of the Ghana Education Service presented a chegue for seven million cedis in response to an appeal made by the mother of Master Duvor, Ms Bernice Quartey through the Daily Graphic. Mr Amoatey said the amount was realised from donations from school children in the seven sub-metros in Accra.

Master Duvor has been suffering from cardiac problems for a year now.

It would cost 12,000 euros (25 million cedis) to replace the boy’s two valves. The Ghana Heart Foundation would pay 50 per cent of the cost.

Ms Darko said the appeal was made after a clinical evaluation and investigation by the Centre showed that Master Duvor had developed rheumatic heart disease.

Further management would involve the replacement of the two valves.
