Zuarungu SHS closed indefinitely following violent student clashes

Zuarungu Senior High School (SHS) has been closed down with immediate effect until further notice.

This directive from the Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, follows violent clashes between Gurune and Kusasi students on Sunday, 20th July.

Reports indicate that the alleged theft of a mobile phone sparked an altercation, which escalated into a full-blown brawl.

Amidst the tension, some school structures were burned, with four students arrested so far.

However, one student reportedly seized a policeman’s magazine and escaped while being transported to the police station.

Amid concerns over potential retaliatory violence, a combined police and military team has been assigned to provide high-security escort for students returning from Bawku to their hometowns.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing, and steps are being taken to restore calm.
