Zoomlion sites attitudinal problem as main challenge to waste management

Bolgatanga, Oct.7, GNA – Mr Laud Mike Tagoe, Upper East Regional Manager of Zoomlion, a waste management company on Wednesday noted that most of the sanitation problems in Bolgatanga Municipality is attitudinal, hence the need for habitual change.

He said the about 450,416.7 kilograms of waste the municipality generates daily could be properly managed if the people pour refuse at the right places for onward transportation to the final dumping sites.

Responding to sanitation management in the region in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, he said most homes that had registered with the company have been supplied with refuse bins that are conveyed by scheduled vehicles that go round to pick them on fixed days.

He said it is disheartening to see people by passing refuse bins placed at public places and litter the environment with waste.

Mr Tagoe said Zoomlion in collaboration with the Municipal and District Assemblies and the environmental health unit are making frantic efforts to improve the sanitation problems by providing communal containers at vantage areas for refuse collection.

Recounting the challenges faced by the company in waste collection, he said poor road network militated against their efforts.

Responding to a question about how the company is ensuring that the final disposal site is not over littered to create pollution? he said Zoomlion is using its compaction trucks to compress the refuse and occasionally disinfect the area.

He said through radio discussions the company is educating the public on observing a litter free municipality.
