In a landmark step toward environmental sustainability, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies, has announced a new partnership with the Government of Zanzibar aimed at transforming waste management on the island.
The deal was sealed following high-level talks between the Executive Chairman of Zoomlion’s parent company, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, and Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi.
Speaking after the meeting, Dr. Agyepong described the discussions as “fruitful” and said both parties shared a clear vision for tackling Africa’s growing waste management challenges through innovation and practical solutions.
“We’re not just talking about clearing waste, we’re talking about turning waste into opportunity,” he said. “From job creation to sustainable urban living, waste can be the driver of change.”
The collaboration forms part of Zoomlion’s broader Africa Expansion agenda, through which the company aims to bring cutting-edge, environmentally friendly sanitation solutions to more countries on the continent.
Zanzibar, with its delicate ecosystem and reliance on tourism, faces increasing pressure to manage waste sustainably. President Mwinyi welcomed Zoomlion’s experience and pledged strong support for the initiative.
“Zanzibar is ready to embrace solutions that align with our environmental and economic goals,” he said. “We are encouraged by Zoomlion’s track record in Ghana and elsewhere, and we see this as a real opportunity to transform our waste landscape.”
The planned interventions include the introduction of modern waste sorting and recycling technologies, the creation of engineered landfills, and the rollout of community-based waste collection systems that generate employment and boost local economies.
Zoomlion also committed to providing long-term technical support and training to ensure the durability and success of the initiative.
