Zoomlion launches pilot project on waste collection in Sunyani

Sunyani, April 25, GNA – Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister has launched a pilot project by Zoomlion Ghana Limited under which waste would be collected at the doorsteps of residents in the region.

The “district assembly project on waste management collection and public education” launched in Sunyani, would be extended to other municipalities and districts in the region. It would engage the active involvement of assembly members in waste collection.

Mr Baffour-Awuah explained that the project would focus on door to door collection of waste in the spirit of public-private participation in waste management.

He said the necessary logistics would be provided for assembly members to actively engage in public education of residents on good sanitation.

“The programme also aims at making assembly members identify with the overall efforts being made in waste management and serve as agents of change in their areas,” he added. Mr Baffour-Awuah urged residents to co-operate with the company and assembly members for the success of the project to ensure good health for all.

Nana Yaw Sarkodie, Chief Executive of Zoomlion Ghana Limited said the company was collaborating with Municipal and District Assemblies towards national development especially in areas of sanitation and good health.

“Zoomlion is collaborating with various government departments and agencies to ensure that the vision of government to ensure clean environment and good health for all Ghanaians would be achieved,” he said.

Nana Sarkodie was optimistic that the project would be supported by all and sundry and even be more successful than any other collaborative programmes undertaken by the company. He said the performance and seriousness of assembly members who would be in charge of the project would be monitored to ensure its success.

Mr Baffour-Awuah later inaugurated a waste management truck valued at 19,500 Ghana cedis for the project.

Zoomlion would be responsible for the servicing, repairs and maintenance of the truck, which is fitted with a public address system for public education on the need for residents to keep their surroundings clean to avoid the outbreak of epidemics.
