Zoology Department receives scanning electron microscope

Accra, Feb. 28, GNA-The Japanese Embassy on Thursday presented a $450,000 Scanning Electron Microscope machine and its accessories to the Zoology Department of the University of Ghana in Accra. The main functions of the equipment are for the analysis and examination

of structures of biological specimens and total quality management in the industrial sector.

The equipment was provided under the Japanese Cultural Grant Aid which started in Ghana in 1988 with the aim of contributing towards the promotion of education and cultural activities. Mr. Yutaka Nakamura, Deputy Head of Mission at the Japanese Embassy, said a number of organizations accessed the facility under the scheme to improve their operations.

Mr. Nakamura said the equipment would be useful to institutions such as the Food and Drugs Board, the Police Forensics Laboratory and School of Health Sciences.

Professor Clifford Nii Boye Tagoe, Vice Chancellor, University of Ghana, noted that the equipment would be an important tool for the investigation of internal structures of biological, medical and engineering specimens.

“It is useful for quality control and management as far as local and imported products are concerned,” he said. He expressed gratitude to the Embassy and appealed to other corporate institutions to also come to the aid of the university.
