The Ashanti regional office of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has sent warning signals to the effect that it would not go to the rescue of any teacher caught engaging in immoral relations with pupils or students.
“Even though teachers need to be reminded of their professional ethics, they are aware of the code of professional conduct, which states: “No teacher shall indulge in immoral relations with a pupil or student.”
Mr James Agyemang Fokuoh, Ashanti Regional Secretary of GNAT, gave the warning at the first quadrennial delegates’ conference of the Adansi West District GNAT at Obuasi at the weekend.
He said the essence of GNAT was to champion the genuine concerns of the teacher as well as assisting in his or her academic and professional development.
GNAT has planned a series of training programmes for the District GNAT executives to enable them perform the duties assigned them creditably.
Mr Joseph K. Boampong, District Chief Executive, said in a speech read for him that the assembly was considering coming out with a separate scholarship scheme to encourage needy girls in deprived and remote communities to attend school.
He appealed to the District Education Directorate to post more female teachers to rural schools to enable them serve as role models for the rural girls.
Mr Boampong, however, asked the directorate to research into their needs and explore what incentives might motivate them to work, adding: “The assembly will not relent in its efforts to assist the directorate in this direction
