The incumbent NDC Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Nii Armah Ashietey has said he remains unfazed by the victory secured by the Parliamentary candidate elect for the area, Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, after the Supreme Court cleared her to hold herself as the elected Parliamentary nominee for the constituency.
The Supreme Court on Monday granted Dr Zanetor Rawlings the green light to go ahead and hold herself as the ruling NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Klottey Korle.
In a 4-1 majority decision on Monday morning, the court said a person was only deemed a candidate after the Electoral Commission (EC) opens the opportunity for parties to submit the names of their nominees elected from their parties primaries and that has not happened yet hence the argument of her not being qualified cannot hold.
The court also directed the High Court to give a ruling in line with the determination by the Supreme Court.
Dr Rawlings beat the incumbent Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Nii Armah Ashietey in the NDC’s parliamentary election last year.
However, Nii Ashietey soon after his defeat argued that Dr Rawlings was not a registered voter at the time she contested and beat him and therefore could not hold herself as a candidate. He consequently filed a suit at the High Court challenging her eligibility.
Speaking to Kasapa News, Kester Kuranchie who’s Special Aide to Nii Armah Ashietey stated that Dr Zenator’s victory at the Supreme Court does not end the suit challenging her eligibility as the Parliamentary candidate, as she has unfinished business at the High Court.
“The issue we sent to court is an internal party matter; we insist that the NDC party has flouted its own rules because Zanetor was not eligible to contest the election at the time she did per the party’s constitution. We are not saying she can’t go to Parliament. The law grinds slowly but it will surely get to its destination. The case is not over yet, we’ll still continue at the High court.”
