Youth of Bankuman present Petition to TMA

Tema, July 7, GNA – Concerned Youth of Bankuman have presented a petition to the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) concerning the improper disposal of fish waste at Bankuman, a suburb of Tema New Town.

Mr Gideon Amevor, Spokesperson of the Concerned Youth who read the petition on behalf of members, explained that they have tried on several occasions to have their plea listened to by state institutions, but all had failed to yield any positive result.

Mr Amevor pointed out that the inaction of the environmental authorities has compelled them to come onto the streets to send a distress call to the canneries to immediately halt the practice.

The Spokesperson said the protest march marks the beginning of a series of legitimate actions in their contingency plan.

He, however, pleaded with the Environmental Health Department of the Assembly and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to act now.

Mr Charles Nii Kotey, Co-ordinating Director of TMA received the petition on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Kempes Ofosuware who was attending to other official duties.

Mr Nii Kotey assured the petitioners that the Assembly would respond at the appropriate time, and that all parties involved would collectively help find a lasting solution to the problem.

The Co-ordinating Director indicated that the Assembly issued letters to the Management of the affected Industries, and interacted with them on how best to properly dispose of the waste, in order to make the community’s environment safe and healthy to live in.

He thanked the Youth for being environmentally conscious.
