Young Ghanaian professionals network in Washington DC

A group of young Ghanaian professionals in the metropolitan area of Washington DC in the United States congregated on Thursday October 30, 2014 to interact and network at Appioo Bar and Grill, a popular Ghanaian restaurant.

The gathering called GH-Mix was the Fall weather edition that was attended by a number of well placed professionals within the Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia areas. There were a number of non-Ghanaians present too.

At 6:30PM, the event was abuzz with interesting conversations, Ghanaian food and cocktails and majority of attendees already taking advantage of some delicious ‘Kelewele’, a popular Ghanaian snack made of fried plantains seasoned with spices.

Nana Ama Afari-Dwamwena, hostess of the event was impressed with the calibre or attendants, something which “exceeded my expectations” she said. Common sites at the gathering was of people exchanging business cards, swapping phone numbers and telling each other about what was new with their business and professional agendas.

Yvette Badu-Nimako—a legislative counsel in Washington DC, Anani Kuevey—a human resource specialist with the Internal Revenue Service of the USA, Afua Riverson—an advisor in the office of the Secretary of State’s Science and Technology department and Chinedu Enekwe—Executive Director of a technology and information firm called TipHub were a few of the young professionals in attendance.

Kwame Asante Ofori, a graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi Ghana now resident in the Washington DC area is a contractor with the Voice of America English to Africa radio where he works as a producer of radio programing.

Kwame looked excited to have attended the Fall edition of the GH-Mix and says “this is my first time and I am happy to see and meet a lot of young and exciting professionals who are doing great in their respective pursuits and building up such a great community within the Diaspora”.

Organizers of the event are looking to make it a more frequent occurrence based off the success of the October 2014 edition and will soon be announcing details of what the 2015 gatherings will comprise of.
