The Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) has stated that the government had made them to believe that it had made them as second-class citizens in the country.
They also indicated that the government is confused about the status of the polytechnic education, as well.
In a press release issued to the press in Sunyani and signed by the GNUPS national secretary Mr. Baah Acheampong, expressed their dissatisfaction over the remarks of the president, Mr. John Agyekum Kuffour at Kumasi polytechnic that a polytechnic graduate must work to prove him or herself on a job market.
President Kufour made the remarks in his recent address at the last congregation of the Kumasi polytechnic.
According to the release, the union wonders how any person can prove himself or her self on the job market when he or she is not given a befitting job placement.
The release said it shocked them as students that the president did not comment, and even refused to reply letters of intervention, but only to come out and say that polytechnic graduate must work to justify his or her inclusion on a job market.
The students in the release regretted that HND graduates are downtroden, if only they have to prove worth on the job market to determine a placement when graduates from the universities have clearly stated job placements starting point at public sector.
The GNUPS, according to them, wonders how the negative image created about polytechnics could be reduced, when people who are suppose to know better says that candidates who get aggregates above thirty should opt for technical education.
The students referred to the Daily Graphic, August 5 edition, when Reverend John Annan Adotey, the head of national office of WAEC made such comments.
It further finds it ironic that the government keeps crying about the brain drain in the country and yet has created a situation where there is neither a befitting job placement nor academic progression for the HND graduates in the country.
The students questioned the president that; iis he expecting them to stay and work in the country.
