The departure of the Yendi Divisional Police Boss, Chief Superintendent Angwubutoge Awuni and his BNI counterpart, Mr. Ben Deri has created fear among the people in the eastern corridor of the Northern region. Mr. Ben Deri has assumed the Northern Regional Command of his institution.
The elders and people of both fraternal feuding factions in Yendi have expressed disappointment at the exit of the divisional security commanders, fearing that their absence may give way to renewed violence in the area. The people expressed their appreciation for the level of impartiality and professionalism exhibited by the officers during the handling of the chieftaincy issue in Yendi. This came to light when Chief Superintendent Awuni paid a courtesy call on the elders to announce that he was billed to take part in a one-year peace keeping mission in Sudan. The Kuga Naa, Abdulai Ibrahim, who is currently referred to as the overlord of Dagbon in the absence of Ya-Na, said: “I am sad to hear that you people are leaving us at this stage. We had hope that you would stay to help us solve the burial issue by your effective and efficient maintenance of law and order. He continued: “we find you very impartial and wish you God’s guidance at the places you are going to”. The Zohe Naa, Mahamadu Salifu of the Andani gate said, “the Lord will protect you and guide you. You will return more experienced”. He expressed the hope that Chief Superintendent Awuni will return to the region to continue the good work after he returned to Ghana. Mr. Abdul Majeed, the secretary to the GPRTU in Yendi, said the GPRTU will miss the Chief Superintendent and hoped the new commander will continue his good work.
Generally, the people of Yendi, both Abudu’s and Andani’s all gave good testimony of the two security officers for their stewardship in Yendi. The two contesting sides in the Bimbilla Skin affair have also expressed reservation on the sudden departure of the officers. Chief Superintendent Awui has since left for Sudan, where he will serve the African Unity (AU) for one year.
