Yelwoko women receive funds for income generation

Yelwoko, March 2, GNA – The Anglican Women Development Centre (ANWDC) in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region, has disbursed 150 million cedis to 400 women in 30 communities in the Binaba area to engage in income generating activities.

The monies are to be used by the women in the areas of rice processing and shea butter production.

The project manager of ANWDC, Mr. John Atiah, announced this at the fifth graduation day celebration of the centre at Yelwoko where seven girls passed out in dressmaking, batik, tie and dye making. Mr Atiah said the money was from the centre’s revolving fund supported by Diakonia, a Swedish NGO based in Burkina Faso.

He said the project, which had lasted for more than 20 years include health education, especially HIV/AIDS campaign programmes in the communities.

Mr Atiah observed that women and children were the most vulnerable in the society and said there was the need to support them to enable them to grow both physically and economically.

He commended Action Aid Ghana and the District Assembly for their untiring effort in supporting the centre.

In an address the Anglican Bishop of Tamale, The Right Reverend Emmanuel Arongo, said import and retail economy alone would not move the country forward, adding that skills acquisition and vocational training was a better option.

He appealed to the government to embrace policies that would encourage the youth to acquire skills through vocational institutions. The Bishop also urged politicians to avoid causing discord, disunity and conflicts adding that it did not augur well for human development.

Mr Moses Abaare Appiah, acting DCE for Bawku West, commended the Anglican Church for its effort in developing all sectors of the economy.
