Asante Kotoko Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, has downplayed the quality of Wydad Athletic Club, insisting the Moroccan side were “overhyped” before their CAF Confederation Cup first-leg clash in Accra.
Wydad secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Kotoko on Sunday in the preliminary round, thanks to a second-half strike that proved decisive. Despite the defeat, Duku believes the Porcupine Warriors were the better team on the day.
“The players are so confident. Before the game, the Moroccans were overhyped. I did not see much of a difference between the two clubs,” Duku told Luv FM.
“In fact, Kotoko even played better in the second half. But for that glorious chance we lost in the first half, the story would have been different,” he added.
Kotoko were reduced to ten men after their goalkeeper was sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty box while trailing by a goal.
Duku remains optimistic about the team’s chances ahead of the return leg in Casablanca on Friday.
“The players know that the Moroccans are just being overhyped. They can play with them. That mentality going into the second leg will push them to go all out. We did it in Nigeria, and they believe they can still do it again.”
Kotoko must overturn the 1-0 deficit to qualify for the group stage, having previously eliminated Kwara United of Nigeria with an impressive 5-3 aggregate victory.
