Kugwania (UE), May 14, GNA- The World Food Programme (WFP) on Wednesday donated a corn mill worth 600 US dollars to the women groups in the Kugwania Community in the Kassena-Nankana District in the Upper East Region.
Commissioning the corn mill, the Country Director of WFP, Miss Trudy Bower -Pirinis explained that the Corn Mill would help empower the Women’s groups in the area to enable them to continue to see to the good upbringing of the children in the community in terms of improving their nutritional status after the withdrawal of the WFP’s support in 2010.
She noted that children were the future leaders and needed to be properly taken care of, particularly their nutritional needs to enable them develop properly and become responsible citizens.
She appealed to the Women to judiciously use the proceeds of the corn mill in taking the care of the children.
Mr. Emmanuel Chegeweh, Kassena Nankana District Chief Executive, in a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Coordinating Director, Mr. Mohammed Khalifa, commended the WFP for working in the area for the past years and noted that the programme had improved the nutritional status of both mothers and children in the Community.
“The WFP has improved the nutritional status of children and their mothers. The relief assistance being given after the flood disaster in 2007 is mitigating the suffering of the victims”, the DCE pointed out.
Mr. Chegeweh explained that the WFP had complemented Government’s efforts at empowering women to undertake viable economic ventures which were benefiting their communities.
He mentioned the introduction of the micro credit scheme that involves training in entrepreneurial skills and basic bookkeeping and agro processing equipment being distributed nationwide to women’s groups to add value to their products as some of the measures adopted by Government aimed at protecting and supporting families in the country.
He entreated the women to put a management team in place that would take good care of the mill.
Mrs. Ruffina Asure, the Kassena-Nankana District Director of Health Services stated that since the inception of the WFP in the District, it had donated food to 12 nutrition and supplementary feeding centres located throughout the district and said six of the nutrition centres being run by WFP had grown into formal schools.
