World Bank to assist in mining activities in Western and Eastern Regions

Sekondi, Oct.05, GNA – Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Western Regional Minister, on Wednesday said the Government was negotiating for a Two-million-dollar grant from the World Bank under the Japanese Social Development Fund (JSDF) to address the challenges being posed mining including ‘galamsey’ in the Western and Eastern Regions.

Mr Aidoo announced this at a press conference in Sekondi said “I have been asked to submit the concept note in request for the money and work is earnestly underway”. He said at a meeting with leading officials of the Information for Development Programme (InfoDev) and the Energy and Infrastructure Unit of the World Bank for the Africa Region, a strong case was made in favour of off-grid solutions to rural electrification to expand and accelerate electrification in the Western Region.

Mr Aidoo said a high profile team from the Bank’s Energy and Infrastructure Sector currently in the country had agreed to meet a team from the region on the proposals.
