World Bank promises $100m in fight against Ebola

The World Bank Group has announced a $100 million commitment towards the fight against the deadly Ebola virus.

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, who made the announcement, said his outfit has activiated its Pandemic Emergency Fund due to devastating effects Ebola has had on West African economies.

Since its outbreak in the subregion, Ebola has claimed close to 5,000 lives with Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone as the worst-hit countries.

Dr Kim on Thursday met Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur at the Flagstaff House, where he made known the Bank’s plans in the fight against the viral disease.

He is in the country to reaffirm the Bank’s commitment to fighting the Ebola pandemic.

He is also expected to meet officials of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER).
