Workshop to renew Ghana’s political commitment underway in Koforidua

Koforidua (E/R), July 8, GNA – A three day workshop is underway in Koforidua in the Eastern Region to renew Ghana’s political commitment toward sustainable development and to provide updates on national strategies aimed towards achieving the goal. The workshop is expected to bring together government representatives, finance experts, scientists and academicians to provide inputs in response to questionnaires provided by the United Nations on policies, programmes and progress made towards achieving sustainable development.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at the workshop on Thursday, Mr. Rudolf Kuuzegh, Director of Finance and Administration at the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, said the information submitted to the United Nations would be shared globally through a publication on the organisation’s website.

He said the participants were also expected to provide an update of the country’s profile on national sustainable development strategies, challenges that beleaguer the implementation of the Agenda 21 and solutions to overcome the setbacks.

Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of action to be taken globally, nationally and locally by organizations of the United Nations system, governments, and major groups in every area in which human impacts on the environment.

Agenda 21 was adopted by more than 178 governments at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, from 3rd to 14th June 1992.

The full implementation of Agenda 21 and the programme for further implementation of the Agenda 21 were strongly reaffirmed at the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 26th August to 4th September 2002.
