Accra, Feb 23, GNA – The Tema and Accra District Councils of Labour on Tuesday said it took a serious view of the possible implications of the 50 per cent price hike of petroleum products on the lives of workers and ordinary citizens.
A resolution adopted at a joint meeting of the councils said ”while petroleum prices went up by 50 per cent, in reality transport fares have also gone up by 50 per cent despite the 30 per cent increases announced by the government.”
The resolution said in view of this and previous pledge by the TUC leadership to fight for a living wage this year, the meeting demanded a realistic wage that would mitigate the effect of the price increases. The living wage should also take care of the uncertainties of the deregulation policy on the pricing of petroleum products.
”The councils will like to call on the leadership of the TUC to remain resolute in its determination to secure a meaningful living wage for the working people of Ghana.”
