Workers directed to wear red arm bands

Tema, July 8, GNA – The Tema District Council of Labour (TDCL) has directed workers within the metropolis to wear red arm bands in protest against utility tariff hikes announced recently by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC).

At an Emergency General Meeting in Tema on Tuesday, the Council stated that the directive was in support of the mother Union, the Trades Union Congress (TUC), in pressing government and the Commission to dialogue with the union to review utility tariffs to realistic and reasonable levels. By wearing the bands, the Council reminded members that they should hold themselves in readiness for any further action to be directed by the TUC.

The Council appealed to employers to co-operate with workers and their union officials in “responding to this very important call as this thorny issue affects every industry and organisation adversely.” It urged employers not only to co-operate to save industries but to also get actively involved to safeguard jobs, families and homes.
