Workers celebrate May Day

Wenchi (B/A) May 1, GNA – About 300 workers of state and private organisations converged at the Town Park in Wenchi in Brong Ahafo to celebrate this year’s May Day anniversary.

The organisations included Union of Industry, Commerce and Finance Workers, Asuo Bosomadu Timber and Sawmills of Berekum, Civil Servants Association, timber and Woodworkers Union of TUC and Scanstyle Furniture of Mim.

Others were Public Services Workers Union, Communication Workers Union, Oti Yeboah Complex Limited, Teachers and Educational Workers Union and Ayum Forest Products Limited of Mim and the District Council of Labour.

Clad in anniversary T-shirts, the workers paraded placards, some of which read: “Positive Change must reflect in our pockets”, “No Electricity, No Life”, “Water is Life”, “Stop illegal connections”, “Public Sector Participation is accepted” and “Public Sector Participation is urgently needed”.

Among those present were Nana Kwadwo Seinti, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister who read Vice President Aliu Mahama’s anniversary speech to the cheering workers, his Deputy Mr Yaw Adjei-Duffour and some members of the Regional Coordinating Council.

Alhaji S.Y. Bukari, Regional Secretary of the TUC read Mr Kwasi Adu-Amankwah, Secretary General of TUC’s speech.

Badges, certificates of honour and ghetto blasters were presented to deserving workers, including Mr Ishau Yak Seidu, Chairman of Kintampo branch of GPRTU, in recognition and appreciation of their devoted services to the labour movement.

A fraternal message from the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) appealed to workers to be patient in their demands for their rights to ensure the development of the country in peace.
