Work on transformer replacement ahead of schedule

Accra, May 29, GNA – Work is progressing steadily at the Achimota Power Sub-Station in Accra where the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDco) is replacing a 33 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) transformer. The 33MVA transformer, which has been serving the Metropolis since 1965, is being replaced with a 66 MVA transformer to improve electricity supply in Accra and its environs.

According to GRIDco, the 33MVA transformer had developed faults resulting in the current intermittent power outages experienced in the Metropolis.

During a tour of the Sub-Station on Friday to assess the progress of work, Mr Albert Quainoo, Head of Public Relations at GRIDco, told the Ghana News Agency that half of the work had so far been completed. Mr Quainoo said as a result of the high rate at which work had progressed, the exercise would end earlier than scheduled to restore uninterrupted power supply to Accra. The two-month exercise, which began three weeks ago, apart from improving electricity supply, is also to satisfy the increasing demand for electricity in the Metropolis. He advised consumers to conserve power in order to save cost. 29 May 09
