Accra, July 22, GNA – Work on the project to connect the East-West pump line into the existing water supply system at Awoshie in Accra is progressing steadily. The 32 million-dollar project involves laying of a 14-kilometre pipe-line between Awoshie and Accra terminal reservoir, the replacement of pumps at Okponglo booster station and construction of a 15 million-gallon per day treatment plant at Weija. Management of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL), operators of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), announced on Monday that, the Weija Head Works would be shut down completely for 18 hours, beginning from Tuesday, to allow for “East-West Interconnection Line” to be tied into the existing water system of Accra.
On a tour over the project on Tuesday, Mr Gilbert Quaye, Head of Projects at the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), said the project would improve water supply to parts of Eastern Accra, which covers East Legon, Madina, Adenta, Ashaley-Botwe, Frafraha, Dome, Tantra Hills, Kwabenya, Cantonments, La, Achimota and surrounding areas. He said the Weija Treatment Plant was undergoing an expansion exercise to increase its capacity to serve the needs of the customers. As part of the project, four new filters were constructed to ensure that water delivered to customers was pure. He cautioned against building on waterways as this affected the distribution operations of the GWCL. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
