Wood villages to be established in Districts

Agona Swedru (C/R), May 25, GNA – Wood Villages are to be established in all the Districts of the country to produce wood for the domestic market in line with the government’s directive that 20 per cent of timber should be reserved for local use.

Mr Antwi Boasiako, National Financial Secretary, speaking at a meeting of the Association at Agona Swedru, called on District Assemblies and contractors to engage members of the Association to undertake their carpentry jobs and to supply them with the right type of wood for their work.

He said this would minimize shoddy work especially in the roofing of houses, as the Association was in a position to enforce standards. Mr Boasiako who is also the representative of the Central Region on the national executive committee, appealed to the Forestry Commission to sell wood confiscated from illegal chain-saw operators to members of the Association.

He urged timber firms to abide by the government directive to meet the demands of local industry and the people.

He advised carpenters, wood sellers and saw millers in the Region to register with the Association that was negotiating with financial institutions for a credit scheme for its members to enhance their work.
