‘Won Gbo’ demo: NPP MPs didn’t boycott Parliament – Mensah-Bonsu

The Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has denied reports the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) boycotted yesterday’s proceedings in the House to participate in the ‘Won Gbo’ demonstration.

Only two NPP lawmakers on Wednesday showed up in the House as the rest joined the party’s protest march in Accra to register their displeasure about the erratic and worsening electricity supply in Ghana.

The minority leader, who joined the march from the Obra Spot where the demonstration began to the finishing point at the Hearts of Oak Park, said they had the blessing of the Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho to absent themselves on Wednesday.

“We have not boycotted Parliament, we are equally using another means to express ourselves,” Mensah-Bonsu told Starr News.

“On Tuesday we told the Speaker we are joining ranks with the people who believed in the message to demonstrate because one way of talking to the government – petitions, motions, the boycotts and walkouts – are all forms of engaging government and demonstrations are one way of talking to the government and we told the speaker we are not coming and we are going to share ideas and it’s a way of expressing ourselves.

“So it is not a boycott of Parliament or walkout but a way of expressing ourselves to the people of this country,” the MP for Suame constituency added.
