Women urged to embrace the Health Insurance Scheme

Begoro, May 22, GNA-Ms Susana Mensah, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, at the weekend urged women to embrace the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) since health care would largely depend on the scheme.

She observed that, traditionally, women are managers of homes hence the need for them to register with the scheme to enable them to ensure good health for their children.

Ms Mensah, who was speaking at the launch of the Fanteakwa District Health Insurance Scheme (FDHIS) at Begoro on Friday, said the NHIS was the surest way to improve health care delivery. The Deputy Minister, who also inaugurated an 18-member board and management team of the FDHIS, charged members to educate the public on the importance of the scheme.

The Regional Deputy Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Emmanuel Tinkorang said the Service was committed to ensuring good quality health care with special attention on women, children, the poor and other vulnerable groups.

The Fanteakwa District Chief Executive, Mr Ebenezer Ofoe-Ceasar in a speech read for him said the lack of adequate number of doctors at the District Hospital could affect the smooth implementation of the scheme. He, therefore, appealed to the Minister of Health to post more medical doctors to the hospital to support the only doctor at post saying, “This request when granted will go a long way to promote the insurance scheme in this area”.

The Executive Secretary of the NHIS Council, Dr Samuel Akor urged the people to register with the scheme and said the minimum contribution was 72,000 cedis, 180,000 cedis for the middle-income people and 480,000 cedis for the rich.
