Women told not to sit on their God-given potentials

Mr. Bernard Agyei, Deputy General Secretary of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU), has charged women not to sit on their God-given potentials, but to work to unearth and use them for the benefit of society.

He said, over the period, women had been relegated to the background, due to unfavorable traditions and socio-cultural prescriptions, which was greatly affecting their inputs to economic development.

Mr. Agyei, was speaking at a day’s seminar for PSWU Women’ Committee member at Apowa in the Western Region under the theme: “Organizing for Empowerment, Employment, Security and Increased Productivity: Women’s Role”.

He pointed out that daring women were not witches, but people who had asserted themselves and risen above the stereotype that society had placed on them.

Mr. Joseph Debrah-Gyamfi, National Chairman of the PSWU, mentioned Finland and Scandinavia as places where women had been highly supported to climb high on the social ladder.

He therefore urged society to give the needed assistance to women.

Sister Christiana Carl Operabea, Regional Chair of the Women’s Committee, who spoke on gender mainstreaming, said the various specific needs of both men and women must be duly considered for the overall benefit of society.
