Woman granted bail over non-payment of VAT

Sunyani (B/A), June 1, GNA – A circuit court at Sunyani presided over by Mr Kofi Debrah on Wednesday granted a 2 million cedi bail with one surety to Josephine Brobbey, operator of Good Mark Chop Bar in Sunyani for failing to register with the VAT service.

The case has been adjourned till June 16 for public hearing. Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Alex Yartey Tawiah told the court that VAT officials on their official duties visited the chop bar and realised that Josephine had not registered with the VAT Service.

He explained that some chop bar operators in the Municipality had evaded tax so the officials were going round to arrest offenders. Mr. Justice Debrah noted that there were a lot of inconsistencies in the laws governing the VAT Service.

He stressed the need for intensive public education to get the chop bar operators to become abreast with the laws.
