Woman drowns in gutter at Chemu

One person has been reported dead at a place near the Chemu lagoon in Tema New Town in the Greater Accra Region following Tuesday’s heavy downpour.

According to neighbours, the woman believed to be in her fifty’s slipped into a gutter and was carried away by the ferocious floods. Reports say the woman had gone out to dispose of human excreta into the gutter when the unfortunate incident happened.

The lifeless body was found several metres away hours later. Meanwhile, several people at Abonkor in Tema New Town have also been rendered homeless as a result of the rain.

The heavy downpour which continued till mid-afternoon led to the Chemu lagoon over flowing its banks, coupled with rise in the Sea level, forcing water into people’s homes and displacing them.

Women and children have been left at the mercy of the weather as properties have been destroyed.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the whole of Golf Estate near Bediako and the Kpone Barrier in the Tema Municipality has been heavily flooded due to Tuesday’s heavy rains.

Speaking to Atinka news, Dr Baffour Asare,a resident at Golf Estate, said the rains had brought almost all work to a halt as many school children did not go to school .

He said the main road leading to the estate has been taken over by floods, making it difficult for people to move about freely.
