Woman dies after illegal abortion

Breman Asikuma (C/R), Sept. 25, GNA – Mercy Adaboa, an 18-year old seamstress apprentice at Breman Baako in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa district of the Central Region who attempted an illegal abortion died soon on admission at the Hospital at Breman Asikuma.

Her boyfriend, whose name was given as only Annor, a taxi driver at Breman Asikuma, who reportedly gave her medication to get rid of the pregnancy has fled and is being hunted by the police.

Detective Police Sergeant Ransford Cobblah of the Asikuma Police Station told the Ghana News Agency that on September 17, 2006, the woman complained to her parents that she had severe stomach pains and was rushed to the hospital.

Sgt Cobblah said Adaboa confessed to nurses at the hospital that she was pregnant and that her boyfriend gave her some pills, which she had inserted in a bid to get rid of the pregnancy.

He said Adaboa’s body had been deposited at the morgue, awaiting autopsy.
